Don’t be the easy victim
Criminals are not looking for a challenge. They want the easy score. Crime prevention is all about being a more difficult victim than the next guy. There is no such thing as perfect security. Your best bet on staying safe and unvictimized is to be a more difficult victim than the next guy and to look like you’re more trouble than your worth. Look around your neighborhood. Whose house looks like the easiest target? If the answer is yours consider yourself forewarned. The next time you’re out in public look at the people around you. How many of them look like easier targets than you? If the answer is none or not many, you’re at risk. In the next post I’ll talk about somethings you can do to reduce your vulnerabilities.
The best defense is not being attacked in the first place
What’s the best way to defend yourself from an attack? By avoiding it in the first place. Criminals look for easy victims and the easiest victims are the ones not paying attention to what’s happening around them. Obvious awareness of your surroundings can help you avoid being a target.
A Man’s Best Friend

You don’t have to outrun the bear, just your hiking partner
Remember the old joke about the two hikers who hear about a killer bear in the area? One comments with fear about how a bear can out run a horse and how they can never escape one if it charges. The other calmly remarks, “I don’t have to out run the bear; I just have to out run you.” That’s crime prevention and anti-terrorism in a nutshell; you don’t have to make yourself untouchable, you just have to make yourself a slightly more difficult target than the next guy.
